Mashudu Malema | 31 March 2017

What a time to be alive! Following the axing of Pravin Gordhan and Mcebisi Jonas, Malusi Gigaba and Sfiso Buthelezi are the country’s new finance minister and deputy finance ministers respectively, much to the dismay of many South Africans

A statement released by Luthuli house after midnight on Friday morning read: “The changes bring some younger MPs and women into the National Executive in order to benefit from their energy, experience and expertise.”

The statement followed a meeting of the ANC top six, Zuma said the Cabinet was reshuffled “to improve efficiency and effectiveness”. Following the announcement, the rand suffered a sudden drop last seen when Zuma unexpectedly axed the former finance minister, Nhlanhla Nene.

Although it was the news of Pravin’s ousting that sent shockwaves throughout the country, other changes were also made, notably in the ministries of energy, transport, police, public works, sports and recreation, tourism, public service and communication. It’s also been reported that ‘Razmatazz’ ANC cadre Fikile Mbalula is the country’s new police minister.

It also so happens that both Mbalula and Gigaba previously served as ANC Youth League presidents.

As expected, political parties and the general South African public were quick to express their outrage to the Cabinet reshuffle.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane urged South Africans to help the DA in firing President Jacob Zuma. “The time for change is now, and as South Africans, we must stand together and defend what so many gave their lives for,” the statement reads.
